File Storage

FastMail.FM has a file storage area in which you can store files, and access them from anywhere in the world (assuming you have an internet connection, of course), and make them available to the public.

You can do a lot of things with your FM File storage, but let me give you some examples: You could use it to save backups of projects you're working on. You can use it to show the world your family photos. You can host a simple website. You can put a large file there that you don't want to send as an attachment, and send someone the link to the file. Or you can just let it be, if you don't feel like using it. The choice is yours.

Accessing File storage

You can access file storage through the "Files" link in the top navigation menu.

By default, your file storage area starts off empty. We recommend you create directories and sub-directories to store your files in and to create some structure.

To create a new directory, select the "Create Subfolder" option from the Action menu, type a name in the "New folder name" textbox, and click "Do"

Storing Files in File storage

To store something in file storage, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the folder you want to store your file in, by clicking on its name.

  2. It should say 'There are no files in this folder'. Let's do something about that.

  3. At the bottom of this page you'll find the Upload area.

  4. Browse to a file, using the Browse... button. (If you need something for an example, try a photo, it'll be good). Make sure the file you choose is no bigger than 70M. Although your storage quota is larger than this, FastMail.FM cannot process files above this size via the web interface.

  5. On the line below the path to your file you can find the Options.

    • Rename to: Gives the file a different name when it is stored on the server.

    • Overwrite: If this is unchecked FastMail.FM will not save your file if a file already exists with the name you're trying to use.

    • Unzip: Allows you to upload a ZIP file and have FastMail.FM extract the contents on the server.

  6. Leave these options for what they are, and press 'Upload'. (Upload More is for uploading a bunch of files at once)

  7. The screen refreshes after some time, and you'll see the file in your file storage.

Retrieving Files from File storage

  1. If you navigated somewhere else, go back to the folder you uploaded the file into.

  2. Check if the file is still there. If not, follow the steps from Storing again.

  3. If there are files in a folder it'll be in a column with the following headings: Size, Name, Website, Rename and Modified.

    • Size: The size of the file.

    • Name: Click on this to download/view your file. This uses the internal access, from within your FastMail.FM account. The "details" link allows you to view more details about the file.

    • Website: Click on this to view the file as it would be seen through the Web Access. You can copy this link and give it out to people.

    • Rename: Fill in a new name here and press the Done button to rename a file. You can rename a bunch of files at once.

    • Modified: The time/date this file was uploaded.

  4. Click on the filename, in the Name column. A dialog will open to download the file.

Download one or more folders as a Zip archive

  1. Go to the top-level "My folders" view of the Files screen if you are not already there.

  2. Select the folder(s) you want to download via the checkbox in front of folder name(s).

  3. Select the "Download Zip" option in the Action dropdown.

  4. Click the "Do" button. This should open a dialog to download a Zip archive file containing the folder(s) you selected.

  5. Depending on the program you use to extract files from the Zip archive after downloading to your local computer, you may encounter problems if folders have root-level directory names (ie, "/Public", "/Private"). You probably don't want to extract folders into your root directory in any case. A workaround for this problem is to specify "extract in directory" option in your unzip program. (For instance, the "-d ." option for the unzip program in Mac OS X).

Removing something from File storage

  1. Go into folder you want to delete files from

  2. Select the checkbox in front of the file.

  3. Click the 'Do' button. This performs the action selected in the Action dropdown, which defaults to 'Delete'.
